1. Your domain name should relate as closely as possible to the product or service you provide. This not only helps people remember your site in reference to a specific product or service, it is also provides a big advantage when submitting your site to search engines, since domain names get high priority.
2. Try to get a .com address (as opposed to .biz, etc.). People habitually type in .com after a domain name, so why go against the grain? In the future, when .com website names will be increasingly difficult to get, a .com address will give visitors the
impression that your company is established.
3. Your domain name should be easy to remember. Try not to get too fancy. For example, avoid words with multiple spellings. Keep your domain name as short as possible. If keeping it short is too difficult, an alternate approach is to pick a domain name that includes keywords relevant to your product or service. A perfect example is ChicagoActors.com. It is an easy name to remember, and it has the keywords "Chicago" and "actors" in it, so search engines will rank it well.
4. Remember to use your domain name in your e-mail addresses. This can be accomplished easily with pop mail accounts or Exchange servers. Many small businesses use AOL, Gmail, Yahoo, or Hotmail for their e-mail, which instantly brands them as sole proprietors working from home. Using your domain name in your e-mail address is an ideal way to
reinforce an established company image. |
